Sweet Corn Farming Method in Bangladesh

Step-by-Step Guide for Higher Yield

Sweet corn is becoming increasingly popular among Bangladeshi farmers due to its sweet taste, strong market demand, ease of cultivation, and good profitability. As a year-round crop suitable for both rainy and winter seasons, following the right sweet corn farming method can deliver excellent returns per acre. Jamalpur Seeds, a leading Bangladeshi seed company founded in 2004, offers premium sweet corn hybrid varieties carefully tested and selected through our R&D trial farm for Bangladesh’s climate and soil. These hybrid varieties help maximize yield, ensure better disease resistance, and support higher farmer profitability while contributing to improved nutrition across the country.

In this complete guide, we explain the sweet corn cultivation process step by step, optimized for Bangladeshi conditions.

Soil Preparation

Hybrid sweet corn grows best in well-drained clay or loamy soil rich in organic matter.

Deep plough the land 4–5 times and let the soil dry in sunlight for 7–10 days. Before the first ploughing, spread plenty of well-decomposed cow dung or compost. Before the fourth ploughing, apply per acre: 150 kg TSP, 50 kg MP, 50 kg Gypsum, 3.5 kg Zinc, and 1–1.5 kg Boron per acre. Always conduct a soil test for accurate fertilizer recommendations. Good soil preparation builds strong roots and supports a higher yield per acre.

Seed Selection and Sowing (0-7 days)

Select high-quality hybrid sweet corn seeds from trusted sources like Jamalpur Seeds. Our varieties perform excellently in Bangladesh conditions.

Use 1–2 kg of seed per bigha. Treat seeds with 20g Dimethomorph per kg to prevent Downy Mildew. Sow in rows spaced 15–18 inches apart, with 7–9 inches between plants. Place one seed per hole at a 1–1.5-inch depth. Raising seedlings in a nursery and transplanting gives better germination and higher yield than direct sowing. Maintain moisture with furrow irrigation. After sowing, apply pre-emergence herbicides such as Alachlor or Atrazine for weed control. Strictly follow the guidelines of the local agriculture department while applying chemicals.

Vegetative Growth Stage (13-20 days)

Apply the first top dressing of fertilizer (around 10g per plant using a 46-0-0 formula of Urea, TSP, and MP). Keep a close watch on pests and spray recommended insecticides and fungicides when necessary. Remove weeds regularly through manual weeding or safe methods.

Pre-flowering and Flowering Stage (23-47 days)

At 23–35 days, apply balanced fertilizer (a 15-15-15 formula of Urea, TSP, and MP) at about 20g per plant. Continue spraying appropriate fungicides, insecticides, and herbicides like Atrazin. During flowering (43–47 days), focus on controlling aphids, thrips, Northern Corn Leaf Blight, and Rust. Jamalpur Seeds hybrid varieties show strong natural resistance to Northern Corn Leaf Blight and Rust, helping reduce excessive chemical use.

Silking stage - 49-53 days
Observe the field and note the 50% silking date — when silk-like threads appear on half of the plants. Begin counting days from this point. Harvest 18–20 days after 50% silking for the best sweetness and tenderness.
Harvesting

In the rainy season, crops are ready in 70–75 days. In winter, they take 75–85 days. Jamalpur Seeds hybrid varieties typically mature in around 70 days with outstanding yield and quality. Harvest corns when kernels are milky and sweet, preferably in the morning for the best market quality.
